TitleGuest Lecture on “"From Research to Markets: A Realistic Assessment"

The event started with an invocation song followed by welcome address by Prof. T.J. Rama Murthy, Director, BNMIT. The guest lecture was preceded by introduction and felicitation to Dr. K N B Murthy, Chairman, BITES. Dr. KNB Murthy gave a glimpse of topic that would be covered by the speaker. He emphasized the importance of research for startup companies and academic institutions. The guest speaker was introduced to the audience by Dr. Krishnamurthy G.N, Principal, BNMIT. Dr. H S Jamadagni addressed the participants on the need for an effective connection between university research and industry activity. The talk focused on academia perspective of research and industry product. He mentioned that excellent ideas come from the research and industry scenario. He made the participants understand how do they choose area, what do starts up do, why research to startup, where do industry and startups get their next big idea. He then explained that research topics were chosen based on current hot topics and not necessarily based on the current hot markets whereas Industry/Startup product ideas were chosen based on current hot markets. He mentioned that company’s survival rate in the research market is 1 in 10 because of lack of long term research goals. He gave insight in to research funding sources and startup funding sources and their expectation on the results. He explained about sources to disseminate research findings and startup marketing, research results evaluation and startup evaluation. A suitable smart phone example was taken by the speaker to explain about how research has progressed in the development of products. He emphasized that research does not always immediately result in a product. He said research and product are two different worlds. Finally he speak of barriers between research community and product community like cultural differences, incentive differences and key for successful engagement is setting up a robust industry research program.

The guest lecture was received with admiration by the audience which included around 100 faculty members from BNMIT, BMSCE and PES. Dr. Sujatha D N, Executive Director, BITES proposed the vote of thanks.
