BITES in association with Indian Centre for Academic Rankings & Excellence (ICARE), VTU, Belagavi and PES University, Bengaluru organized ‘Role of Ratings, Rankings & Accreditation in Creating Institutions of Eminence & Excellence’ workshop on 21st July at PES University.

Workshop addressed many questions, doubts and challenges, by bringing together higher education leaders with World University Ranking Experts & Erudite Academic Scholars to discuss strategies related to sustainable institutional development, internationalization and innovative management.

Among several global rankings, ARWU, QS QuacquarelliSymonds & THE are considered three of the most authoritative summation of rankings and has rapidly emerged as de facto league tables of performance globally.

Workshop provided an unique opportunity to hear from the ranking experts themselves and also shared their own perspectives especially from an Indian stand-point and which will make Global Ranking Agencies understand some of our unique challenges that they may then like to take into consideration when designing specific regional rankings.

As higher education continues to expand it has become a vast global collegial competition for prestige, resources and talent, in which every university cooperates and networks actively with its peers and competitors. No university can afford to hang back from the challenges of performing in this environment, and with everyone else lifting; the only way forward is continuous improvement. The global pecking order and the brand value of each university are shaped by university rankings. Though global ranking began only in 2003 its power has quickly become immense. Regardless of the limitations, biases and problems of particular measures, rankings have an ever-growing influence in shaping university reputation, student choices, the capacity to attract high-performing staff, government policies and funding, and the decisions of employers and university benefactors.

Participants immersed themselves in the dialogue and engaged actively with new ideas about how to lift the measured performance of their institutions in research and teaching and in national and global reputation!
